Nutrition, Immunity & Microbiome

Good nutrition is essential for honey bee growth, reproduction, immunity, and colony health. While nectar and honey provide energy, pollen supplies the proteins, fats, and other nutrients bees need to thrive.

In our lab, we investigate how nutrition affects honey bee health, from individual bees to entire colonies. We study the effects of different diets on colony performance, immune function, and drone fertility. A major goal is to identify and validate molecular biomarkers of nutritional and health status. We also explore the connections between nutrition, the gut microbiome, and bee health. By combining laboratory and field research, we aim to better understand honey bee nutritional needs and support healthier, more resilient colonies.
